SharePoint Library Document Locked

SharePoint Library Document Locked

Problem

User is working with a document from a SharePoint library and receiving an error when attempting to save, or check in the document. "The file "[file name and path]" is locked for exclusive use by i:0#.w|survice\username." Where username is usually the user having the issue.

Solution

  1. User should copy contents of document into a new document and save locally to make sure changes are not lost.
  2. Then close the document and discard checkout in sharepoint library.
  3. Exit all office applications (excel if excel, word if doc, ppt if powerpoint).
  4. Wait ten minutes.
  5. Try again.
