Microsoft Application Repeatedly Prompting for Password
Problem
Onsite at a SURVICE location, or currently on VPN, and Office is repeatedly prompting for password.
Solution
Exit all Microsoft applications.
- Launch Credential Manager.
- Go to and select Windows Start
. - Type Credential Manager in search box.
- Select Credential Manager Control Panel to launch.
- Select Windows Credentials.
- Do the following for each Generic Credential.
Delete all credentials that note anything Microsoft related, to include Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.

Be certain to delete the two credentials indicated in the illustration below.

- Select the arrow
located to the right of each credential in the list.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm Removal/Deletion.
- Launch Command (CMD) Prompt
- Go to and select Windows Start
. - Type CMD.
- Select Command Prompt application to launch.
- Type gpupdate and hit the Enter key.
- Wait for the script to run and return to CMD prompt C:Users\firstname.lastname>.
- If it errors, go to step 6, then repeat this step.
- Lock your computer.
- Ctrl+Alt+Del.
- Select Lock.
- Unlock your computer.
- Re-launch Microsoft applications.

If you are still being prompted, it may be necessary to repeat the steps again and then restart your computer prior to step 8.
